When I joined VCS HR as the first UX/UI designer, I stepped into a product ecosystem that had been entirely developer-driven, with no standardization or defined design practices.
VCS HR builds scheduling and payroll software for public safety agencies — tools that are powerful, data-dense, and critical to daily operations. Over time, the UI had become a patchwork of components, styles, and interaction patterns. Buttons behaved differently across pages. Spacing and typography varied widely. Visual hierarchy was inconsistent. Each developer had made reasonable decisions in isolation, but collectively the system lacked cohesion.
Because Maverick is a dense, data-heavy product used for scheduling, payroll rules, and administrative workflows, clarity is critical.
My goal was to create a scalable design system that would bring consistency to the product, simplify complex interfaces, and provide developers with clear guidance for building future features.
